Program Title: The Questions of Mining: in BC and globally
Description: This Women On Air program is focusing on concerns and questions that were brought forward during the panel discussion called "The Future of Mining in BC: Cooperation or Conflict" on October 6th, 2011. The panel addressed many issues and questions were raised about how best to implement, enforce and regulate a "Best Practices Mining Code." Progressive law reform, environmental factors, economic justice for all involved, land use planning and water rights, along with the protection of First Nation's people and their traditional territories were discussed. Concerns were also raised about abandoned mines, noise pollution and poisoned drinking water from mining practices. Consultation between government, the mining industry and First Nations regarding resource management and development of ancestral lands was a hot topic even though the government rep did not show up as planned for this event. (It is a provocative time for lawyers in these areas of potentially changing archaic laws!)
This panel was hosted by the First Nations Women Advocating Responsible Mining (FNWARM) and the Environmental Law club at the University of Victoria, occupied Coast Salish Territories, BC. For more information on BC mining and the renewed proposal re: Prosperity mine at Fish Lake, contact www.fnwarm.com and //fonv.ca/activities/fishlake/
