Program Title: Future of Mining in British Columbia:Cooperation Not Conflict
Description: This panel was hosted by the First Nations Women Advocating Responsible Mining (FNWARM) and the Environmental Law Club at the University of Victoria, on occupied Coast Salish Territories, BC.
This is the panel discussion of the public panel between First Nations leaders, government and industry ... even though the government rep cancelled that day on October 6th, 2011. Panel went forward and some concerns were raised around land use planning, water rights and consultation and how to best address these major issues: now and in the future. International law and the increase of global mining on indigenous people's lands was another topic discussed. The recent United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was mentioned and it was confirmed that the declaration has no enforcement power. Other international agreements were mentioned regarding the enforcement of international laws and mining practices.
Host(s): Moderator of panel - Andrew Bell from the Business News Network
Featured Speakers/Guests: Chief Bev Sellars of the Xat'sull (Soda Creek) First Nation, Chief Ed John of BC First Nations Leadership Council, Gavin Dirom from the Association for Mineral Exploration in BC, Zoe Younger from the Mining Association of BC and Professor Bonnie Docherty of the Harvard International Human Rights Clinic
Credits: Thanks to the First Nations Women Advocating Responsible Mining (FNWARM) and the Environmental Law Club for hosting event.
