Description: GroundWire Community Radio News: July 29 -August 12 2013 http://groundwire.ncra.ca/

This week's edition produced by CKDU in Halifax

The Headlines
-Small-scale fisheries are the cornerstone of many of Canada’s coastal communities. A current initiative undertaken by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) calls on Canadians to recognize and protect this cornerstone by adopting the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication. | Halifax Media Co-op

- Changes to social assistance rules that occurred in August 2011 have made life much more difficult for Nova Scotians living in poverty. This is the conclusion of a report by the Nova Scotia chapter of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA).

-The potential sale of Genetically modified alfalfa in Canada continues to stir controversy. Two members of the National Farmers Union in Ontario are using the province's Environmental Bill of Rights to request an environmental assessment on the impacts of the GM seed before it is sold in Ontario. | CKDU Halifax

Community Radio Report
-This week CKDU Reporter Katie Toth takes us on a trip to the National Campus and Community Radio Conference in Winnipeg June 2013, hosted by CKUW | CKDU, Halifax

The Features
- The announcement of a Halifax-based commercial radio station's summer concert has sparked controversy and protest over headliner Chris Brown. Residents of Halifax question whether Brown, charged with domestic violence and assault toward his then-girlfriend Rhianna, should be invited to perform. | CKDU Halifax Jordan Roberts, Asaf Rashid, William Young, Gianna Lauren | CKDU Halifax

- Two women from Halifax have released a playful but serious video in response to American pop star Robin Thicke's recent single "Blurred Lines." Kaleigh Trace and Mary Burnet, both employees at Venus Envy, a sex shop and bookstore on Barrington St., came up with "Ask First" in response to Thicke's song, which they say glorifies rape and sexual assault. Gianna Lauren | CKDU Halifax

- Vancouver Falun Gong practitioners call on ending 14-year-long persecution in China. July 20 marked the 14th anniversary of persecution against Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party. In front of the Chinese Consulate on the Granville Street in Vancouver, about 200 Falun Gong practitioners held a candlelight vigil to remember those who have died from the persecution in China, calling on Canadians to help to end the brutal persecution. | Hershy He, John Zhang CJSF Burnaby
