Program Title: Women on Air: July 31, 2013
Description: This episode of Women on Air features Johanna Socha, the publisher of Island Gals, as well as Andrea Paquette, the found of the Bipolar Disorder Society of BC.
Almost everyone has probably glanced at the magazine headlines while buying groceries. We’re used to titles like “Lose 10lbs in 7 Days,” “Have the Best Sex Ever” or “Celebrity Scandal!” Recently, some Vancouver Island women got together to create a different type of magazine directed at women. This magazine is called Island Gals, and it is dedicated to bringing readers the stories of women from Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and across Canada. Island Gals publisher Johanna Socha has joins Robyn Spilker for a live in studio interview.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, ~20% of people in Canada will experience a mental illness at some point in their life, and about 1% will experience Bipolar Disorder, which is also known as manic depression. Though mental illnesses are very common, research shows that much silence and stigma surrounds mental illnesses. The Mental Health Commission of Canada found that 60% of people with mental health problem or illness won’t seek help for fear of being labeled. The project Bipolar Babe and the Bipolar Disorder Society of BC have taken on the task of stomping out stigma related to bipolar disorder. Andrea Paquette, the bipolar babe who founded the Bipolar Disorder Society of BC, comes to CFUV’s studio to discuss her work.
