Program Title: BC Aboriginal Child Welfare Press Conference
Description: Wed Nov 6th, the BC Representative spoke to the press in Victoria (and other locations by phone) about her new report based on 12 years of research into the province's spending on aboriginal child welfare. She found that some 66 million dollars was wasted on discussions intended to try to find someone other than the province to administer the child welfare programs - money that came out of the ministry's already strained budget and led to no concrete results. She condemned the lack of rules around these funds and the lack of proper accounting for them, as well as the ill-conceived concept of the whole process. Featured Speakers/Guests: Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, BC Representative for Children and Youth, is a lawyer and advocate for children's rights, and a judge on leave of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan.
