Description: Host Michael Mehta takes a ride on Gabriola Island’s own GERTIE public transportation system.
Like a lot of community initiatives, GERTIE had a long gestation period dating back to the 1990s, and in the Summer of 2013 two buses took to the road.
Many people were skeptical that an island with only 4000 plus residents could support this service, but by October 2013 GERTIE transported 5.4 passengers per hour – which is considerably higher than other similar services in small communities, and the ridership keeps trending upward with more than 5000 passengers to date.
Recently GERTIE won a $10,000 prize from the BC Hydro Community Champions competition, and the future looks even more promising for our community bus service.
GERTIE driver and team coordinator Steve Jackson gave Michael a ride around the island so that we could hear first-hand what GERTIE means to the community and how she operates.
