Over the past several decades house calls by physicians have become rare indeed. As medicine became more high tech in the 20th century, physicians tended to locate their practices near hospitals and universities, and in clusters with other allied health professionals. The idea was to provide a continuum of care and to access expensive diagnostic tests and therapeutic technologies in an efficient way. At least that was the theory, yet lingering doubts exist about the efficacy of this approach - and with health care budgets chewing up more and more of the GDP, significant change is need.

With an aging population, and a more mobile society than ever before, and due to advances in information technology and its democratization, policymakers and entrepreneurs are exploring options for shifting care away from hospitals and clinics and back into the home, or office, car or anywhere else mobile Internet-based technology can work.

In British Columbia a relatively new company called MEDEO is at the forefront of providing people with access to physicians through videoconferencing. On this show you will hear from Ryan Wilson (CEO of MEDEO)), Lilian Varcoe (a patient who uses the service), you’ll listen to an anonymous testimonial, and learn about how MEDEO works with physicians to improve healthcare from Kay Holt (Director of Physician Engagement).
