Program Title: Indian Residential Schools And Modern Child & Family Services: Comparing Concepts Of Cultural Genoci
Description: In January 16, 2012 Justice Murray Sinclair chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (then investigating the Canadian Indian Residential School experience) used tough language to describe the relationship between Canada, Canadians and Aboriginal peoples. He has called the interactions during the IRS era, a form of cultural genocide sparking widespread debate. Over 150,000 children had been stolen from their homes and placed in Euro-Canadian religious institutions to undergo indoctrination into a different way of life. While the last Residential school was closed in 1996, today there are still Aboriginal children being taken by state run child welfare agencies. Currently there are 30,000 children under the care of the state with 48% being Aboriginal. Does this also constitute genocide?

The independent radio documentary Indian Residential Schools And Modern Child & Family Services: Comparing Concepts Of Cultural Genocide produced by Robert Falcon Ouellette and Tim Maton explores in greater detail the similarities between IRS and child welfare agencies looking to understand this difficult continuing period of Canadian history and if this is a fair comparison to make.
