Program Title: WINGS #27-15 Abortion in Chile
Description: As of October 25, 2015, Chile's Congress is debating de-criminalizing abortion in cases of life-endangerment, fetal malformation, and - up to 18 weeks only - cases of rape. But of an estimated 33,000 abortions a year in that country, few fall into those categories. The rest avail themselves of clandestine abortion. This program won the Radio Award from the International Association of Women in Radio and TV in 2015.
Host(s): Alexandra Hall
Featured Speakers/Guests: Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile; “Marcela Gonzalez,” who had an illegal abortion about four years ago; Anita Román, President of Chile’s School of Midwives; Maria Angelica Figueroa, midwife of the regional hospital in Concepción; Carolina and Inez, Volunteers at the Free Abortion Hotline and Members of the Lesbians and Feminists Collective of Santiago and Iquique, Chile.
Credits: Producer, Alexandra Hall; Series Producer, Frieda Werden
Comments: Description of self-abortion includes insertion into vagina.
