Program Title: NewFound Records - Ep.375 - Season Premiere
Description: NewFound Records returns for a new season with a mixed bag of vinyl recordings by Newfoundland & Labrador's pioneer recording artists. Included are a variety of obscure records which were added to the program's library over the summer.
Also on the playlist are three songs from the oldest Newfoundland record in the NFR library. It's an ultra-rare 78 rpm single released in 1921. On one side is the unofficial anthem of Newfoundland before the present Ode to Newfoundland was adopted. Most Newfoundlanders know that unofficial Ode well but few, including myself until recently, are aware that crowds once stood to attention whenever it was played. On the other side of the 78 are two melodies for the current Ode.
Another highlight of this episode is a track by a young Ron Hynes from his very hard-to-find first LP entitled Discovery. It was released in 1973. And the program also pays tribute to the first musician to merge Newfoundland traditional folk music with rock, the late Laverne Squires.
