Program Title: WINGS #12-18 Not Prisons
Description: Twenty years after Australia opened its first private women's prison, activist and lawyer Amanda George told Women on the Line that women in prison are almost all locked up for drug-related crimes, and almost all have suffered traumatic abuse. She advised the money from prisons go to improving conditions for women and children and needed care, and said the goal is to abolish prisons. Rachel Herzing discussed her work with projects training communities and individuals to take responsibility for stopping and preventing violence. [Updated from WINGS #06-10]
