Program Title: WINGS #23-18 Canada's Sexual Assault Centres - Between rights and realities
Description: The book Canada's Promises to Keep: The Charter and Violence Against Women (CASAC Report for short), tells the gripping history of Canadian feminists' work to carve out legal and economic space for fighting violence against women, in a country undergoing neoliberal structural adjustment. The promises they try to hold the country to are those in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (installed in Canada's Constitution in 1982) and the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW - ratified by Canada in 1981). A summary of the research in the book can be found here: http://www.casac.ca/content/canadas-promises-keep-charter-and-violence-against-women - CASAC stands for the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres
Host(s): Frieda Werden
Featured Speakers/Guests: The author of this CASAC report, Lee Lakeman, received an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the Univ. of British Columbia for the research and writing in this book. She was a frontline worker at Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter for more than 30 years.
