Program Title: Small Island Politics-Is This How Democracy Works?
Description: Fourteen voters try to change the outcome of a recent election by filing a legal petition, in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, to have the winning candidate removed from office. They seize upon the donations made to a Go Fund Me campaign set up for the winning candidate’s demented father after his cabin burns down, claiming donations are bribes and many of the islands non profits received kickbacks through a local government program. Problem: Their evidence is incredibly erroneous and they have just insulted a large proportion of the island.
Disenfranchisement Through Small Island Politics
In response to a legal petition designed to remove Cortes Island’s Regional Director, the Strathcona Regional District Board puts three critical programs on hold. Interviews include two of the island residents trying to present a petition in support of their director and someone who has been lobbying the Strathcona Regional District for the past year and a half. Half of the information in the petition is found to be erroneous (organizations accused of taking kickbacks through programs they were not in; people said to hold positions they did not have) and the remainder unsubstantiated.
