Program Title: WINGS#46-19 Matilda Joslyn Gage, Renegade Suffragist
Description: Historian Sally Roesch Wagner discusses her favourite US suffragist, Matilda Joslyn Gage. Gage modeled her feminism on the practices of her neighbors, the Haudenosaunee indigenous women; she broke with Susan B. Anthony over alliance with the Women's Christian Temperance Union, wrote extensively against patriarchal religion, and inspired her son in law L. Frank Baum to create the woman-led, egalitarian society of Oz.
Host(s): Elayne Clift
Featured Speakers/Guests: Sally Roesch Wagner is an American feminist actor and historian, and editor of The Women's Suffrage Movement (Penguin 2019). The first chapters of that book are by Gage.
Credits: Interview by Elayne Clift (recorded 1998, updated 2020 by Frieda Werden)
