Program Title: NewFound Records - Ep. 586 - The Doyle Songbooks
Description: This episode marks Gerald S. Doyle’s 128th birthday. Doyle was a businessman and Newfoundland folklore enthusiast. He compiled three main songbooks of Newfoundland songs & poems and distributed them for free throughout the island. Many of the songs were thus published for the first time and may have been lost forever but for Doyle’s efforts.

He also used the books to advertise his phamaceutical products including cod liver oil. And he helped finance several of the earliest recordings of Newfoundland songs by Art Scammell and The Commodores Quartet.

For this show, we spin a playlist filled with songs from the Doyle songbooks with tracks by Art Scammell, Alan Mills, Omar Blondahl, Lew Murphy, Tickle Harbour and more. It’s a great listen for those interested in the preservation of Newfoundland’s folklore and culture.
