Program Title: A medical mystery in New Brunswick
Description: A cluster of cases of suspected neurological illness in New Brunswick includes symptoms ranging from memory loss, to muscle atrophy and terrifying hallucinations. Out of 48 patients being studied, nine have died.
In March, provincial health officials raised the potential of a mysterious brain disease driving the cases. Experts noted symptoms in young patients and the concentration of cases around Moncton and the Acadian Peninsula.
Now, the province has changed course, questioning the existence of such a disease. Today on Front Burner, Matthew Halliday explains the shifting provincial strategy that’s frustrating patients and families — he’s editor of The Deep Magazine, and author of a new feature chronicling the investigation for The Walrus.
