Program Title: Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart - 50th Anniversay
Description: 2008 marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of Chinua Achebe's seminal novel 'Things Fall Apart'. Its publication in 1958 was a significant literary and cultural even in Africa. Its popularity was derived from the mood of nationalist self-assertion that prevailed in Nigeria at the time, but also across the African continent. Chinua Achebe has often recounted how the reaction provoked by negative representations of Africa in European literature led to his writing of Things Fall Apart. Since its publication in 1958, its appeal has only broadened in Africa and beyond, and the novel has lost none of its compelling force that derives not only from its engagement with the colonial encounter, but also from its reformulation of the inherited imperial language.
