Description: Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, now a professor at Columbia University, gained fame as the translator of Derrida, and also as an originator of post-colonial studies. Her best-known phrase is "Can the subaltern speak?" In a keynote speech to the US National Women's Studies Association, she explained the origin and meaning of the question, and went on to elaborate ways that global feminism must open the ears of those who work in the globalization matrix so that they can hear expression that comes out of different systems and assumptions.
