Program Title: Thinking critically about the Canadian immigration system
Description: Who's let in? Who's left out? and Why?
National mythology portrays Canada as a diverse and welcoming country, but the nation’s immigration policy, migrant workforces, and deportation orders tell a different story. Are our borders really open to anyone seeking a better life? Or just to those who look like they'll "fit in" and who serve Canadian economic interests? Does the Canadian government really care about how (im)migrants live, or just how their labour can be used to work in the favour of Canadians, especially wealthier ones?
This panel was organized by
Fuerza/Puwersa-Guelph, the University of Guelph Central Student Association, and OPIRG. It was held on 30 0ct 2008 at the University of Guelph.
Listen in on this no-holds-barred look at the history, politics, classism and racism of the Canadian immigration system.
